As you will probably already know by now, Venice is a wonderful destination that attracts visitors from all over the world each and every year.
Based in north-east Italy in the middle of the Venetian lagoon, Venice is blessed by its unique geography with more than 100 islands connected by picturesque bridges and thousands of canals, it’s a city like no other!
Famous for its luxurious and prestigious hotels overlooking the Grand Canal and Rialto Bridge, as well as many other stunning palaces of the historical city centre, staying in Venice can be quite expensive.

Thinking about the sheer amount of solo travellers in Venice or visitors with a ‘tight budget’ I decided to put together this guide that cover a list of some of the best hostels in Venice so you can get inspiration for your future stay in the city.

- Staying in a hostel is the perfect solution for someone that is travelling on a budget. The hostels are much cheaper than the hotels of the historical city centre. Venice is considered an expensive destination, and a big chunk of the budget normally goes into booking accommodation.
- The Venetian hostels are fantastic alternatives to the classic hotels and guest houses. Besides, some of them feature modern industrial designs or are part of recently refurbished palaces.
- There are many Venetian hostels, and they are all based in the city centre. This means that you can stay in Venice with a low budget, but without giving up on the idea of getting out and be at a couple of minutes walk from Venice’s iconic attractions and landmarks.

Anda Venice

Anda Venice is based in Mestre, and just one train stop away from Venice (10 mins!). It’s also well-connected by bus that will get you directly tp Piazzale Roma at every hour of the day.
This is an award-winning hostel and offers contemporary designed female and mixed dormitories as well as double and family rooms.
Its strong points are the presence of both private and social areas, a fully equipped kitchen, the laundrette and the working stations. Furthermore, to enjoy aperitivo time from the comfort of the hostel, you can join other travellers at the Alai Life Bar!

Generator Venice

Among the list of best hostels to stay in Venice, I couldn’t forget to mention Generator Venice, nothing less than an ex granary turned into hostel!
Only one stop away from St. Mark’s Square, the hostel is based in the Giudecca island, the closest island to Venice (after San Giorgio Maggiore).
This hostel is a great place to stay for its exclusive location, the incredible design of its social spaces and the great view over the Grand Canal. There are shared dormitories or private ensuite rooms available, a café, free Wi-Fi and 24 hour reception.

Combo Venezia

It’s not only a great place to stay for solo or on budget travellers, but a fantastic meeting point for locals too because of the bacaro (traditional cicchetti bar) within the hostel!
Additionally, what makes this accommodation so cool is that it’s located in the ex-Convento dei Crociferi. The unique features of the ex monastery have been enhanced, to give a new life to this space.

The Backpackers House Venice is another hostel centrally located in the historical neighbourhood of Dorsoduro. This area of Venice is where most university students hang out and the perfect district to discover lovely local-owned shops!
So if you’re looking for the best place to stay in Venice on a budget, the Backpackers House Venice is your place!
Based in campo Santa Margherita and close to attractions such as Gallerie dell’Accademia and Peggy Guggenheim Collection, the hostel offers both shared and private rooms. It’s only possible to pay by cash upon arrival.

Ca’ dei Fuseri

Ca’ de Fuseri is only 200 meters away from St. Mark’s Square and 300 from Rialto Bridge. This is definitely one of the most centrally located hostels of Venice, a place to stay in the heart of Venice without breaking the bank!
The hostel is on the third floor of a recently refurbished palace, a perfect place to immerse yourself in the Venetian life. Ca’ dei Fuseri offers single and double ensuite rooms or shared one, free Wi-Fi, mini bar and TV.

Hostel Colombo Venice
Hostel Features:

The hotel and hostel Colombo Venice is both a budget hotel and a hostel.
In fact, it’s divided into two separate buildings: one with private double, triple and family rooms and the usual hotel services, perfect for all guests who are looking for some privacy.
The second building offers shared dormitories, ideal for backpackers and young tourists looking for fun and affordable accommodation in Venice!
The hostel is based in Marghera and only 4-minute walk away from Venice Mestre railway station.

Where will you stay in Venice?
There’s a great selection of cheap hostels in Venice and around the historical centre. If you’re looking for more affordable options, check out the hostels in Venice Mestre too, which is the closest town in the mainland to Venice.
Venice is divided into six neighbourhoods (called ‘sestieri’ in Venetian dialect) and although they all offer a range of hotels and hostels, I suggest booking your stay in neighbourhoods: San Marco, Dorsoduro or San Polo.
These are the best neighbourhoods to stay Venice: San Marco is where St. Mark’s Square, the Doge’s Palace and the Bridge of Sighs are located.
Dorsoduro is great for people interested in museums and art galleries, as well as to do some shopping in locally owned shops. San Polo is the oldest one, popular for its lovely small piazzas and the Rialto Bridge.
Budget travel tips for booking hostels in Venice:
- Hostels in Venice not only have dormitories but even double and single ensuite rooms if you want to have more privacy. You’ll generally save more money than booking a 3 or 4-star hotel room.
- Some hostels have kitchens in communal spaces or even in the room. By making use of this facility, you can save a lot of money. I recommend heading over to the market early in the morning and getting fresh products.
- Usually, hostels offer bed linen, sometimes towels, a free city map to get acquainted with the city (don’t buy one!), and free Wi-Fi.
- On your arrival you pay a tourist tax of 2.80 euros per night per person from the 1st of January to the 31st of January and from the 1st of February to the 31st of December the amount is 4 euros per person per night.
- You can also store your luggage for free in some hostels, so you won’t have to pay for one of the city luggage storage that you can find in some tourist locations like St. Mark’s Square and Venice Santa Lucia station.
- If you’re a digital nomad or remote worker, it’s worth knowing that some hostels have free communal working space areas and meeting rooms so you don’t have to head over to coffee shops and pay for food and drinks to work from your laptop.
