At this point, I feel like we’ve built our own little Venice club.
You send me your juiciest questions (from the best time to dodge cruise-ship crowds, to where to find the dreamiest spritz), and I get to spill the secrets.
Honestly, it’s become one of my favourite parts of writing this blog.
And because Venice veterans never run out of curiosity, the questions keep coming: bigger, bolder, and sometimes wonderfully random.
Venice Reader Mailbag Vol 3
So in this round, I’m tackling even more of your Venice curiosities: the offbeat, the overlooked, and the “I wish I knew this sooner” kind of stuff.
Grab an aperitivo, get comfy, and let’s dive into your latest Venice questions:
But first, I’d like to take this opportunity to remind you that I offer trip consultations and even AMA calls where you can ask me questions about your trip over a live call.
Question #1
Is Burano and Murano worth a visit? We have 5 nights booked in Venice so we do have time. We are going to take a day to the Dolomites within those 5 days also. What day of the week is best to leave for a day trip. Are attractions and restaurants closed on certain days? I love following you on Instagram and your blog. Great info.
Yes, they are both worth a visit and you can cover them in one day too. I recommend going during on a week day instead of weekend. Keep an eye on the forecast because in the mountains, change fast and it could rain.
Usually, everything is open and based on your travelling dates and you should find everything open as usual. Thanks for following me on IG and reading the blog!
Question #2
Do you provide private 1.5 day tours?
I don’t do tours, but I created a 1.5 day Venice itinerary if you want to learn more! I also offer a 60% off to loyal email subscribers. Follow this link to enjoy the offer.
Question #3
I have been to Venice previously, but I have a travelling companion that has never been. In your opinion, what are the major sites to see…we have 3 full days and nights in Venice.
I’d say everything I suggest in my 3 days in Venice guide is good advice to follow for a first timer in Venice. That itinerary also includes hidden gems, so it’s perfect even for someone that has been to Venice before, like you.
Question #4
Where can I get the best coffee – do the fancy cafés on St Marks serve good coffee, or is it more about coffee, experience & location?
They serve good coffee, but it’s more for the experience and location (when considering the prices!). I recommend coffee at Caffè del Doge (the signature coffee brand in Venice) and La Bottega del caffè Dersut for variety of coffees.
I also have a guide on the best coffee in Venice that you can take inspiration from.
Question #5
Unique off the beaten path things to explore! Any fun day trips? Prosecco Hills? What is a good price point for purchasing glass?
Check my guide on non-touristy things to do in Venice. Unique experiences are visiting islands like Sant’Erasmo, San Francesco del Deserto and Vignole with its vineyards. Another one is to visit San Pietro di Castello and Sant’Elena island. In terms of fun day trips I suggest: Prosecco hills for sure, Verona, Padua or Treviso.
See my guide on the Prosecco hills and my experience at Cal Monda winery. About Murano glass, it really depends on the item you want to buy. It could be as little as 20 euros for a pair of earrings, to thousands for a vase or chandelier.
I personally recommend that even for a small object to pay a minimum of 30/40 like a necklace, earrings, ring. Price also varies based on the design and artisanal handwork.
Question #6
Do you have any restaurant suggestions, please?
There are plenty! Here’s a couple I really like and where locals go:
- Osteria al Cicheto
- Trattoria da ‘a Marisa
- Osteria ai Promessi Sposi
- Osteria Ca’ D’Oro alla Vedova
I also love Osteria al Cantinon and Algiubagio for fine dining but always Venetian cuisine. Near San Marco and Rialto, Rosticceria Gislon for medium prices dishes.
I have more suggestions and more practical information about dining in Venice and the food in my Venice food handbook, check it out! Since you are a subscriber, remember that you can use the 60% off discount I offered once you subscribed!
Also, I have recently launched my comprehensive map of Venice which includes all the best restaurant of the city, let me know if interested so I’ll share it with you.
Question #7
What are the best Venice neighbourhoods to avoid crowds?
The best neighbourhoods to avoid crowds are Cannaregio, Castello (northernmost area) like towards Sant’Elena island, Dorsoduro towards Zattere and Giudecca.
If you are interested in exploring these neighbourhoods, I invite you to check out my Venice neighbourhoods guides and maps.
