A gondola ride is a Venice experience every traveller should try at least once.
Gondolas have been part of the city’s history for centuries, and today they remain an iconic way to explore the canals from a completely different perspective.
What many visitors don’t realise is that gondola prices are regulated by the city.
There is a fixed base rate, but the final cost can still vary depending on:
- 1. The time of day
- 2. Whether you choose a private or shared gondola
- 3. How long you stay on the water
- 4. Whether you add music or other extras
This guide breaks down every option clearly, so you know exactly what you’re paying for and how to plan your ride without surprises.
How much is a Gondola Ride in Venice?
Most travellers to Venice that I speak to wish to ride a Gondola, and I find that there are many misconceptions about pricing, so below I will put it all in writing below.
Remember that I still offer trip consultations and even AMA calls where you can ask me questions about your trip over a live call, if you want more personalised tips.

1. What’s the official Gondola price in Venice?
Venice sets an official rate for standard gondola rides, so you won’t find drastically different prices between stations.
- The price is per boat, not per person (maximum 5 passengers).
- Standard duration is about 30 minutes.
- Every gondola station must display the official price list.
- You can find more details about this in my gondola ride guide.
Official Base Prices:
| Time of Day | Cost (per boat) | Duration |
| Standard Daytime | €90 | 30 minutes |
| Evening (after 7 pm till 4am) | €110 | 35 minutes |
These prices apply across Venice, from the Grand Canal to the quieter back canals.
2. What’s the difference between daytime and evening Gondola prices?
The main factor that changes the cost of a gondola ride is the time of day.
Price Comparison:
| Type of Ride | Price | When |
| Daytime Ride | €90 | Until 7 pm |
| Evening/Night Ride | €110 | After 7 pm |
Why do evening rides cost more?
- Gondoliers work extended hours
- Higher demand, especially around sunset
- The atmosphere is different (quieter canals, softer light, fewer boats)
Sunset rides are more popular, so expect longer queues, even at less central stations.
3. Can you book a longer Gondola ride?
Yes. You can extend your gondola ride beyond the standard 30 minutes.
- Extra time is charged at a fixed rate and the price difference will be proportional to travel time.
- For both daytime and evening rides, each additional 20 minutes should cost €40.
- Always agree on the total price before you sit down in the gondola.
If you want a longer, more relaxed experience, especially to combine back canals with the Grand Canal, this is a great option.
4. Should you choose a private or shared Gondola?
You can experience a gondola in two ways:
private rides (the traditional option) or shared gondola tours (often booked online).
Private Gondola Rides
- Full control over route (within reason)
- Better for couples, families, or groups of up to 5
- Calm, personalised experience
- Cost-effective for small groups since the price is per boat
You can book in advance your private gondola ride. The cost might be higher than the fixed price set by the Comune of Venice because you are paying a tour agency and other third parties to deliver the service.
Shared Gondola Tours
- Cheaper per person, usually €30–40 per seat
- Route is fixed and usually shorter
- Less flexibility and less privacy
- Good option for solo travellers or anyone on a budget
You can book your shared gondola ride in advance to keep the costs down. Shared rides are typically booked through tour platforms and depart from specific stations.
5. Do Gondola routes affect the price?
The official rate is the same everywhere, but the experience can vary a lot depending on the route.
Grand Canal Routes
- More iconic views
- More traffic, especially near Rialto, Bacino Orseolo, Trinità and Dogana Vallaresso during peak season and special events
- Often chosen by first-time visitors
- Limited number of stations directly on the Grand Canal
Back Canal Routes
- Quieter, more atmospheric
- Great for photography
- Often pass through charming neighbourhoods away from the crowds
- Gondoliers may recommend these routes when the Grand Canal is busy
You can request a preferred route, though the gondolier has the final say based on set routes, canal traffic and safety.
6. How much does a Gondola Ride with singing or music cost?
The romantic “singing gondolier” exists, but it’s not part of a normal ride.
- Gondoliers do not sing unless you book a dedicated serenade package.
- These packages usually include musicians (a singer and/or accordionist) in the same gondola.
- Prices vary depending on the provider, but expect around €200+ per person on private serenade tours.
If you want music, you must book this in advance. It’s not something you can simply request on the spot for a small extra fee.
7. How can you avoid overpaying or misunderstandings?
To ensure a smooth experience, confirm the following before the ride starts:
Checklist to Agree On
| Category | What to Clarify |
| Total Price | Confirm the exact amount for your full ride. |
| Duration | If extending beyond 30 minutes, confirm cost and total length. |
| Route | Ask what route the gondolier recommends and whether you can request alternatives. |
| Passengers | Maximum is 5, and price does not change based on headcount. |
Tips to Avoid Issues
- Use official gondola stations, where prices are displayed.
- Avoid random offers from individuals outside stations.
- Tips are optional, gondoliers don’t expect them.
- You can pay by cash or card.

Final thoughts
Gondola rides are one of Venice’s most iconic experiences and I definitely recommend doing one. With the city’s regulated pricing, it’s fairly easy to understand what you’ll pay:
- €90 for a 30-minute daytime ride
- €110 after 7 pm
- €40 per additional 20 minutes, but confirm this with your gondolier and agree on the price on the spot
- More if you want music or serenades or a photoshoot, let’s for a special occasion like a wedding proposal.
- Private gondolas are ideal for couples and families, while shared rides are great for budget and solo travellers
- Routes can vary, but the price stays the same everywhere
With the right expectations, and by confirming the details in advance, a gondola ride can be a wonderful, memorable part of your Venice trip.
