Map of Venice

To creative thinkers the map of Venice may seem looking like two palms put together or even like two serpents’ heads devouring one another. Anyway, take notice of the gap between two islands. The blue line in the form of an inverted S is Canal Grande, the biggest one of 177 canals that intersect Venice. Canal Grande is 4km long and 30-70 metres wide.

Find in the left upper corner of the map the beginning of Canal Grande. A marked up bright orange building is railway station Venezia Santa Lucia. Tourists are brought from here to hotels by vaporetto and water taxis. Most of them try to get to the centre, closer to San Marco Square and to the lagoon (below to the right). Here in the area of the square the most expensive hotels, cafes and shops are situated. If you go up the map from San Marco Square, you’ll see Rialto Bridge – one of the three bridges crossing Canal Grande. The area near Rialto Bridge is a busy place loved by tourists where a lot of shops and restaurants are situated and, what is more, the view to the palaces of Canal Grande opens.

Venice is a small island. For example, a walk from San Marco Square to Rialto Bridge won’t take you more than 15 minutes. Venice can be crossed from one end to the opposite end in just an hour.
