Rome is one of the oldest cities of the planet. It is called an eternal city. Under the basements of the today’s buildings as deep as 4 to 28 metres remnants of foregone epochs are still being found; the oldest constructions are dated 12th century B.C.
Every time left its profound trace in the appearance of the city. Rome is built up of architectural ensembles created in the Ancient Times, in the Middle Ages, the Renaissance. Practical ancient Romans invented arches, structural concrete, water supply system, public lavatories and baths, multi-storey buildings, saying nothing of amphitheatres, fountains, bridges, aqueducts and other complicated engineering structures.

The Renaissance decorated Rome with buildings by Bramante, sculptures by Michelangelo, fresco paintings by Rafael. In 17th century the genius of Baroque, a sculpture, architect and painter Bernini worked in Rome.

In the middle of 20th century the territory of Rome became vastly larger because of new housing estates at the outskirts. In the latest several years under the sign of celebrating 2000 years of Christianity there have been a great many of monuments restored, the airport reconstructed, many places for the first time ever have seen local decorative lighting.

The eternal symbol of Rome has always been and still remains Colosseum

It is the pride of Rome, the witness of its imperial amplitude and magnitude. Colosseum was built in the first century A.D. as a spectacle scene. At first those spectacle were theatrical battles of warriors, then this became a place for sacrificial offerings of slaves and executions of Christian martyrs. Then emerged gladiators who were taught to fight and kill each other. The horridness of the performance was exasperated by participation of wild animals in it. The arena was often filled with water and then marine battles were arranged. The killed would be brought out of Coliseum through the Gates of Death, the winners would go back to their cells through the Gates of Victory. Under the bottom of Colosseum amphitheatre there still exists a labyrinth of corridors, cells, cages for animals. Fights between people and animals lasted till the 5th century A.D. Nowadays Coliseum is not used as a theatre scene but as a tourists place.
